In 2000, the Chino Hills Junior All American Football & Cheer organization welcomed a new member to the pack. A cheerleader named Laiken Kenwood, who’s legacy is the epitome of what it means to be a Bulldog. Laiken wasn’t only a cheerleader; she was also a fellowship leader. Advocating for children enduring cancer, educating her peers through actions of good sportsmanship, and demonstrating good citizenship by her activeness within the community.
At the young age of five, Laiken began cheering as a Mascot and was quickly determined to learn all of the cheers, and practiced even harder to build her athleticism. As she grew older, she developed in her talent moving into higher divisions, always remaining a role-model for the younger athletes, and taking every opportunity to invest into her teammates. Turning nine, Laiken’s family would learn she had Leukemia, and they instantly started her three-year battle of managing childhood cancer. Although this diagnosis brought on unimaginable and paralyzing fears, Laiken persevered through her treatments, continuing to attend school and sports, and also traveling to enlighten others about acute lymphocytic leukemia, all while keeping a positive mindset and expressing a hopeful attitude. It is in these behaviors of courage, fairness, respect, positivity, and optimism that Laiken embodies the Bulldogs spirit, and is an aspiration for current and new athletes to embrace.
Although our new participants will miss the experience of physically meeting her, it’s through her memory, we hope you get to know her. Laiken’s spirit continues to guide our cheerleaders in their athletic journey, and to help them become the best they can be. In tribute of her resiliency to an unexpected diagnosis, her courage to take on a life altering prognosis, and her unwavering will to give it all she’s got, we recognize her efforts through the Love 4 Laiken Award.
